Record Breakers Return
The record breakers and speed demons were back in
business at the Snowstorm Classics due to mostly dry roads and moderating, seasonable
temperatures. Carlos Rivera notched his fifth win and
the fastest time this season with a 16:59 outing, strongly pulling away from a handful of
rivals midway through the 5K. Harrier teammate Paul Fratini (17:14)
continued his steady improvement to gain 2nd by edging newcomer Ben Piecuch
(17:15). Steve O'Neil (17:21) took master's honors over Celio
Hernandez (18:11) and John Bigos (18:23). GSH's Junior speedster
Heather Wenninger (21:19) cruised to her third women's
title over Harrier Mary Misiaszek (22:48) and Greater Boston Track Club
visitor Elizabeth Spelman (23:37). Three runners sped their way into the
record books. Hartford Track Club's Zofia Turosz plugged a whole in the
records by becoming the first sixty year old women to complete the course with a 24:52
clocking. At the other end of the age spectrum, eight year old Robert Bradley
(that's right, born in 1990) ran 20:57 to shave nine secords off the record for ten and
under boys set just last year by Fast Feet Track Club's Joey Deluca. And
the ageless Harrier Roland Cormier garnered his fifteenth age record on
the course with an impressive 18:43, knocking nearly a minute off the old record for 59
year old men of 19:34 set by Bob Green of the Empire One Running Club in
1992.
