The Young Robert Knowlton
Sets Another Record
Light snow the day before gave the
perfect backdrop to the opening of the 5K Snowstorm series. The somewhat slick
conditions in the Park did not prevent fast times from being posted as four new age
records were established.
Carlos Rivera led all to notch his
second Snowstorm Classic victory of the early season with a speedy 16:58. Southwick
High Schooler Andrew Pitts proved he can run with the open runners as the fifteen year old
raced to an impressive 17:20 clocking. Senior sensation Bob Willis took 3rd
in 17:36, taking down the course record for 50 year old men in the process, besting
the 17:50 standard set by Frank Rucki just this past season. Donna Levy of the
Boston Running Club journeyed down the Mass Pike to capture the Snowstorm Classic women's
title in a very respectable 19:10. Central Mass Strider Sidney Letendre took 2nd
in 20:26 and set a new record for 46 year old women by a scant one second, erasing the
mark held by fellow CMSer Mary Ryzcek for the past eight years.. Harrier
Betsy Duquette broke the record for 45 year old women with her 3rd place 21:00, topping
the 21:16 set by teammate Carol L'Esperance six years ago. And as earlier reported, 82
year old youngster Robert Knowlton came down from the Berkshire hills for the eighth
consecutive year to become the oldest finisher in the 21 year history of the Snowstorm
Classics. His 34:50 clocking is his eighth individual age record on the 5K course.
