David Raucci and Cheryl Simoni in Snow Less Snowstorm.
While Foxboro stadium enjoyed near white-out conditions and New-Englanders were held at the edge of their seats as they willed the Patriots on that final overtime drive, no snow could be found on the Snowstorm 10K course earlier that morning in Springfield.
David Raucci's time of 35:34 was good enough to take the overall crown from Paul Fratini (35:55) who prevented Joe Raucci (37:31) from making it a junior one two punch. Though Steve O'Neill is now a senior he still makes life difficult for the remaining masters runners as he took 4th overall (37:50) and took the masters and seniors divisions also. John Bigos (38:46) was the second master home and Brian Goddu (44:19) second senior. The
veteran division belonged yet again to Charlie Towse (45:07).
On the women's side it was Cheryl Simoni (42:33) who after attacking on the opening hill was never in danger from there. Mary Misiaszek, who stayed within striking distance through the halfway point took second (44:28) and Cindy Walsh (46:11) third. The masters division went to Diane Culhane (51:15). It was the seniors division that had the closest race of the day, as Sue Grant's attempt to catch Steve Terrien in the closing stages was sufficient to keep her seven seconds ahead of Ellen Bellicchi to claim the seniors division.
In this record setting Snowstorm Classic year it would seem that mother nature is also trying to get in the record books as the series approaches week 9 and it has yet to live up to its name. Maybe next week ....
