Brrrrrrr…….How Cold Was It?
Well, Willie O’Neill
ran in shorts…. but that’s just Willie O’Neill. For the rest
of the Snowstorm Classic faithful, hats, gloves and layering were
the order of the day as the temperature hovered around 0 degrees
after setting an all time record for January 10th of
minus 8 below zero earlier in the morning at the Westover weather
reporting station in Chicopee Falls. There were several reports of
penguin sightings on Porter Lake, but those reports remain
unconfirmed.
Soon after the 10K
arctic expedition began, Harriers Carlos Rivera and Tom Bousquet
quickly opened up a large lead on the rest of the field. The two
young runners raced around the outskirts of Forest Park penguin
like, seemingly immune to the bitter cold, and using the dry roads
to their advantage. At the finish it was Carlos in front with an ice
cube solid 35:53, with Tom crossing shortly thereafter in an equally
respectable 36:39. For Carlos, it was his third win of the
season, and 25th career victory.
Doug Guertin outran
everyone else while edging Mike Montemagni 40:06 to 40:08 for master’s
honors, while Frank Rucki topped the seniors in 40:29.
Kelly Heroux became
the newest member of the Hall of Fame with her first Snowstorm
Classic women’s title, navigating the wintry ten thousand meters
in 43:54. GSH teammate Mary Misiaszek clocked a 44:55 for 2nd
while Kristin Ashe was 3rd in 48:53. SMACer Sue Grant
swept the master and senior titles by traversing the frozen tundra
in 56:41.
As for Willie, he
was seen thawing out in the skatehouse after his 45 minutes and 42
second challenge to Mother Nature, and a 25th place
finish.
