Records Fall Instead of Snowflakes
Kent Lemme Notches One; 
Jennifer Emblidge Joins Hall

            New Year celebrations began early in Forest Park as an all time record crowd turned out for the final Snowstorm Classic race of 2005.  Cold temperatures (23 degrees) but dry roads greeted the 148 entrants including some of Western Mass’ speedier road racers.  Carlos Rivera was gunning for his third consecutive win but faced serious challenges from UMass’s (by way of Chicopee) Joseph Czupryna, newcomer James Larson, Williamstown’s ace Harrier Kent Lemme, Michael Sullivan and a return visit from GSH’s Scituate division Mike Kelleher. 
           The sound of Sacramento cowbell triggered a stampede up the first hill where three of the favorites broke from the pack.  With a brisk early pace Carlos, Joseph and Kent separated themselves from the rest of the contenders as a colorful throng of runners stretched out around the Forest Park playing fields.  Soon however one runner forged into the lead with a gritty combination of speed and endurance ...Kent Lemme.  Surging down the final hill, past the surprised feathered denizens of the ponds,  Kent charged across the finish line in 16:29.  In maybe his final race before becoming a master, Kent sliced ten seconds off the course record for 39 year old men set by teammate Paul Fratini only last year.  Suddenly the Harrier men’s master team is looking good.  Carlos finished 2^nd in 16:50 while Joseph was 3^rd in 17:16.
           Mr. Kelleher again captured his division with a masterful 18:25, while Tim Dannay (18:48) was the first junior (under 20).  Central Mass Strider Frank Rucki (18:51) not only edged Harrier Steve O’Neil (18:56) for senior (over 50) honors, but in the process he shaved four more seconds off the age record for 56 year old men which he set earlier this month.  Peter Gagarin, representing the Sugarloaf Mountain gang, was the first veteran (over 60) in 20:32.
           The women’s race was every bit as fast as Holyoke Catholic science teacher and coach Jennifer Emblidge became the 81^st member of the Snowstorm Classic Hall of Fame with a 19:29 clocking in her first effort over the Forest Park 5K course.  Newly minted Harrier Sarah Kasabian-Larson took second with a quick 20:13 while Holyoke Catholic ace Barbara Powell garnered junior honors with a 3^rd place 20:37 just edging Belchertown’s runner/swimmer Christine Dzialo (20:40).  Harrier Rogina Modestow captured another master’s crown in a speedy 21:18. 
            Connecticut resident Lyn Walker made her trip north a successful one as the Hartford Track Club member shattered the 26:17 age record for 65 year old women set by Harrier Connie Bills nearly 14 years ago.  The native Australian ran an impressive 23:59 to chop a full 2 minutes and 18 seconds off the past standard.
