Blanchard And OToole Break Records
Doug Blanchard and Jim OToole each set a new
age record on the 8K course, adding to their collections. Jim established a new mark for
64 year old men with a solid 33:56 clocking and erased one of the oldest records on the
books, the 34:43 mark set by none other then Harrier legend Rufus Reed back on August 31,
1982. Several runners thought they heard some distant thunder as the record fell; Rufus
has one remaining record, for 65 year old men. Doug simply ran his usual workmanlike
race, circling Forest park in 38:40 to set a new standard for 73 year old men. He now
holds seven individual age records on the 8K course.
While the two veterans were rewriting the record
books, the usual cast of speedy Harriers were winning the race. Carlos Rivera continued
his Summer Sizzler domination with a front running 27:59 clocking. Gary Crowley gave chase
for second in 29:07, with Bob Willis third and first master in 29:27. Heather
Wenninger was first woman in a quick 31:45 with Dawn Roberts steady pace good for
second in 35:10, while SMACer Madeline Nagy was third in 36:01.
