Summer Sizzler 2000 Finale. The year 2000
Summer Sizzlers ended on a warm summer day with Carlos Rivera, Betsy Duquette and Robert
Knowlton each commemorating the race in their own way. Carlos was chasing Olympic
Trials participant Sandu Rubenciuc around the twisting Forest Park trails when an out of
sight Sandu mistakenly veered off course for the second straight race. That left
Carlos out front where he stayed for a 18:54 win. High schooler Chris Comeau took second
in 19:56 while Len Bilodeau just held off fast charging Harrier teammate Mike
DeFilippi for third, both clocked in 20:12. Mike took a nasty tumble in Dry Gulch but
despite a cut hand, in true cross country fashion, dusted himself off and raced to he
finish.
For the women, Betsy Duquette continued her rapid return to form
with a 23:27, slicing over a minute and a half off the age record for 45 year olds she set
only a month ago, and capturing her first Sizzler win in quite some time. Becky
Murphy took second in 26:57 with Ellen Ravens-Segel third in 28:51. Betsy now holds six
Summer Sizzler records on the cross country, the most amongst the women.
And Robert Knowlton did some record breaking of his own, becoming
the oldest person to finish the infamous Harrier course. At 81 years old he bested Doug
Blanchard by seven years and gave us all a goal for the ensuing years, ie. 38:16. clocking
gave the Champ course.
