Records Fall Along with Brian Goddu
Runners took advantage of a beautiful May day by toppling several
cross country age records, while Brian took advantage by just
toppling…more on that later.
Carlos
Rivera (17:27) notched his third consecutive win by edging Barney
Day champion Ron Lombardi (17:41) as the two Harriers recorded two
of the fastest times in recent years. A rebounding Brent Coon took
third in 19:51 with 4th place finisher Billy Rowe (20:46)
the first master. Stan Kolpa won senior honors in 21:20.
Heather
Wenninger recorded her 16th lifetime Summer Sizzzler
victory with a quick 21:00 clocking while new Harrier teammate Candy
Goyette took 2nd with an impressive 21:28 on her initial
journey over the course. Candy earned herself a Fast Feet gift
certificate by clipping 4 seconds off the 21:32 record for 27 year
old women set by Michelle Sosnowski four years ago.
Elizabeth Duquette’s 22:32 captured third place as well as master’s
honors, and sliced another 41 seconds off the record for 47 year old
women she set just two weeks ago. Meanwhile Betty Matthews earned
herself the record for 49 year old women with a solid 27:32 effort,
erasing the 28:05 standard set by SMAC’s Judy Scott twelve years
ago. The two long time members are currently ranked 2nd
and 3rd in the Summer Sizzler Hall of Fame with
thirty-one and thirty victories respectively.
Inspired by his siblings, six year old Eli Johnson became the
youngest boy to ever finish the Forest Park cross country course as
he gamely kept pace with Mom in 40:55.
As for
Brian? After countless flawless races on this and many other
courses, he took a hard fall in the Pine Forest at about the
half-way point. Despite a broken shoulder (confirmed later at the
hospital) Brian got up, dusted the pine needles off, and finished
the race in 19th place in 25:46, beating nearly half the
field, including club president Pete Stasz, in the process! Those
Harrier Senior Men are not only fast, but tough!
