Lombardi and L'Esperance!
What a difference a week can make! The heat and humidity being
replaced by a taste of fall with little or no humidity and start
time temperature in the upper 60's. The weather brought with
it one of the bigger fields of the year.
The race turned out to be a duel between eventual
winner Ron Lombardi (27:29) and Assumption College runner Jason
Lukasiewicz (27:34). Greg Waryasz (28:45) rounded out the top
three.
Carol L'Esperance (33:19) made her debut for this
season series count, she cruised to a win in the women's division
and in doing so set an age record, breaking the 34:55 standard for
52 year old women set by Mary Ryczek four years ago. Erin Lyman (34:49)
and Krishna Lonanecker (36:32) rounded out the top three.
Speaking of records, Art Roberts (31:37), was not
only good enough for sixth place but also set a new record for 58
year old men, erasing Jim O'Toole's 32:11 mark set nine years ago.
The 'Cool Under Fire' award must go to race
director Sharon Mikaelian as circumstances contrived to try and make
this night a difficult one. Quick thinking, short circuited
the impending problems, and at the conclusion of the race all
runners agreed that the new light weight mobile results board was a
big hit. It may become a permanent feature!
