Times and Temperature Sizzle as
Mateicka and Baadj Win
Despite the heat and humidity, fast times were the order of the day
on the 5K cross country course. Six runners were bunched together at
the "small, barely noticeable bump" just before the one
kilometer mark, and each one had the look of a winner. The race was
on! And it would take the twists and turns, ups and downs of the
famous Harrier cross country course to help separate the runners.
With nervous Las Vegas bookies monitoring the checkpoints, it was
the heretofore unknown Bob Mateicka who charged up the finishing
hill in the lead to capture his first Summer Sizzler crown in a
quick 17:43. Brian Nelson soon followed in 17:52, with GSHer Paul
Fratini right behind in 17:57.
Seth
Roberts clocked a 22:03 to rule over both the masters and seniors,
edging Joel Boucher (22:16) in the first category and Harrier
teammate Brian Goddu (23:43) in the second.
Nadia
Baadj scampered to her second consecutive Summer Sizzler cross
country title with another impressive effort, a 20:18, just off her
age record performance of two weeks ago. Harrier
teammate Christina Langevin took second in 23:03 while Elizabeth
Duquette made it a GSH ladies sweep with a third place 24:18 and the
masters title.
