Charlie Towse Beats the Record/Heat
On a day
when health officials were issuing exercise advisories/warnings and
the
local news media (East Longmeadow Reminder) thought the race unusual
enough to send
a photographer, the Harriers matter-of-factly proceeded with the
Summer Sizzler 5K.
After all, we don’t call then Sizzlers for nothing!
Harrier
Charlie Towse, taking his cue from the record setting heat (the
official high temperature for the day at Bradley Field was 99
degrees, and at Westover Field 97 degrees, all time records for
August 14th.) matter-of-factly proceeded to break the
record for 64 year old men. Charlie sweated over the Forest Park 5K
cross country course for 23 minutes and
39 seconds, over a minute faster then the 24 minutes and 44 second
record set by Harrier
Bud Aronson fourteen years ago.
Brian Nelson
and Scott Sutter paced the hot field in 18:37, with Brian getting
the nod when Scott eased at the wire. Sixteen year old GSHer David
Eastabrook took third in 20:12 while CMSer Steve O’Neil took both
master and senior honors in 21:07.
Twelve year old
Jordan Roby of the New Britain Dog Pound (Connecticut) club captured
the women’s title in 23:57 for her first ever Summer Sizzler win.
Vickie Cavanaugh took second in 26:05 while Katherine Nelson was
third in 27:24.
Only two races
remain in this year’s series; next week will be the final 8K road
race, while the following Wednesday the 5K cross country race
concludes the 2002 Summer Sizzler season.
