Lombardi Concludes Season with Record Run
Harrier Ron Lombardi
began the 2002 Summer Sizzler season on Everett Barney Day with a
wire to wire win on the 8K road course. He closed the season in
similar fashion, only this time he took down the 17:38 record for 38
year old men held by Celio Hernandez these past eleven years. The
smooth striding accountant from Southington, Connecticut, sprinted
into a commanding lead at the start, then spent the next quarter of
an hour chasing the imaginary Mr. Hernandez from 1991. Fighting
fatigue and the clock up the final hill, Ron crossed the line in
17:28 to claim his first Sizzler record since he was setting the
standard for distance running at Palmer High.
Recent Citadel grad
and track standout Scott Sutter soloed over the Forest Park trails
in 18:56 for second, while Harrier David Estabrook prepared for the
high school cross country season with a solid 19:43 effort. SMACer
Richard Clark was first master in 21:22 while Brian Goddu
supplemented his Harrier newspaper reporting duties by winning the
senior title in 22:39 and in the process exacted a measure of
revenge on the Harrier cross country course.
Twelve
year old Jordan Roby of the New Britain Dog Pound (Connecticut)
captured her second women’s victory of the
Summer Sizzler season with an speedy 23:52 clocking. Colleen
Cummings took second in 24:56 while the Hartford Track Club’s
indomitable Zofia Turosz took third in 25:28 and in the process set
a new standard for 64 year old women, chopping nearly six minutes
off the old record set by Barbara Hennig of the Hudson Mohawk Road
Runners Club (New York) way back in 1989.
Thus
the 2002 Summer Sizzlers are concluded. The Greater Springfield
Harriers wish to thank all those volunteers who made this series
possible, particularly race director Sharon Mikaelian, Harriers
Brian Goddu, Elizabeth Duquette, Neal Lamberton, Sue Crowley, Pete
Stasz, Tom Whelan and friends Bruce Kurtz and everyone else who
helped out during the season. And of course our sponsor, Fast Feet,
Inc. Until next year……..
