The
Summer Sizzler season reached its mid-point under cloudy skies, both
literally and figuratively. Trinity College student Tom Walsh rather
enjoyed the warm, light rain as he toured Forest Park in 29:31 for a
comfortable win. The former Cathedral High half mile ace garnered
his first Sizzler crown, notwithstanding the Hall of Fame listing of
two wins for another Tom Walsh.
Mary
Ferraro again dominated the women’s field with a brisk 31:16
clocking, placing her 2nd place overall while earning her
a seventh women’s victory for the season, including four in a row.
Art Roberts (32:31) out dueled fellow Harrier Seth Roberts (33:23)
for 3rd place overall as well as first master and first
senior. Kristin Ashe (34:44) and Colleen Cummings (36:13) took the
silver and bronze medals for the women.
The
overcast and rainy weather created an appropriate atmosphere for the
news which struck GSH club members and other Summer Sizzler runners….the
passing of long time Harrier Doug Blanchard.
Affectionately nicknamed the Champ by club president Pete Stasz
(based on his winning the USATF National Masters Cross Country
Championships in his age division several years ago in Palo Alto,
California), Doug was a Summer Sizzler mainstay who holds a total of
26 age records, including 13 consecutive age records on the cross
country course. He will be missed by
all of us.
