Ron
Lombardi Captures Finale
Mary Ferraro Wins Record Setting 14th
The 24th season of Summer Sizzlers concluded on
the 8K road course with Ron Lombardi and Mary Ferraro cruising to
comfortable wins. Well
maybe not comfortable. Despite
milder temperatures, the high humidity which has prevailed most of
the summer continued, frustrating those seeking speedy times. “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity.”
Still, both winners put up impressive numbers.
Ron stampeded around Forest Park in a 28:27 for his second
win of the season and 12th lifetime title.
The running accountant thus moves into a 9th place
tie in the Summer Sizzler Hall of Fame.
Mike Montemagni raced the roads in 30:28 for 2nd,
garnering master honors while serving notice that he will soon
bolster an already powerful Harrier senior men’s team.
Junior David Estabrook claimed 3rd in 30:59 to
complete a GSH top three sweep.
Mary Ferraro completed a remarkable Summer Sizzler season by
winning her 14th race
of
the year in 31:59. Only
Carlos Rivera (1998) has won as many Summer Sizzlers in one year,
and
the 14 wins instantly jumps Mary into the Hall of Fame top ten.
Not only did she make Harrier history by winning two Sizzlers
outright, but she set two age records on the cross country course.
Kristine Ashe (35:01) edged Carol L’Esperance (35:04) for 2nd
as both runners just missed cracking the 35 minute barrier, with
Carol taking both master and senior honors.
The curtain thus drops on the 2003 Summer Sizzlers. Next year will mark the 25th anniversary of these
popular Greater Springfield Harrier races and the club will
commemorate the occasion appropriately
