Roland Cormier Returns With Another Age Record
As late summer temperatures cool, the Summer Sizzler competition is
heating up. Kent Lemme sojourned from the farthest corner of
Massachusetts for his first tour of the Harrier cross country
course. The Williamstown resident took to the Forest Park trails
like Brer Rabbit in the Briar Patch as he scampered up and down the
hills in 17:25 for his first Summer Sizzler title. In the process he
broke an age record which has stood for fourteen years, Celio
Hernandez's 17:32 for 37 year old men.
Brent Coon finished second for
the fourth consecutive race with another season pr in 19:04 while
Mike Butler took 3rd by cracking the 20 minute barrier with a 19:54
effort. Harrier
men completed a sweep of the age divisions with Dave Estabrook the
first junior in 20:05, Bill Rowe the first master in 20:55, Bill
Martin the first senior in 20:59, and Roland Cormier the first
veteran in 23:33.
Although it was Roland's first Summer
Sizzler in four years the results were very familiar, another age
record, slicing 6 seconds off the standard for 64 year old men set
by GSHer Charlie Towse just two years ago. How familiar? Roland now
owns 17 different age records on the cross country course,
exemplifying three decades of superlative running.
Harriers Kelly Heroux and Mary
Ferraro continued their August challenge for the women's crown and
for the fourth week in a row finished one, two. A pr 21:09 earned
Kelly her 13th win of the season and reversed last week's order of
finish. Mary crossed in 21:39 followed by fourteen year old Rebecca
Engell who clocked an impressive 22:10 for third, outrunning
thirteen year old Jackie Lemme (23:12) for first junior girl.
Barbara Bosworth won masters honors in 26:31.
The 2004 Summer Sizzler season
concludes next week, September 1st, with a final race
on the 8 kilometer road course.
