This week’s race was undoubtedly a race of many
celebrations. It was a speedy and comfortable night with temperatures
in the mid 70’s and the first and last finisher finishing a little
over eight and a half minutes apart.
Prior to the ringing of the cow bell signaling
the start of the race,
the 19 race participants gave a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday to
Mary Ferraro who celebrated a milestone birthday.
Recovering from a recent IT band issue harrier Steve
Lombardo (21:08) came up from the final hill in first place
followed by fellow senior harrier Steve
O’Neil (21:39) and making it 1,2,3 for the harriers was 30 year
old birthday girl Mary Ferraro (21:58). Coming up behind Mary was the father and son
duo of Seth and Frank Roberts. They were neck and neck until the foot of this weeks
predicted time winner Frank (22:49)
hit the flour finish line first out stepping his dad harrier Seth
(22:50).
Another father son duo running this weeks race
produced first junior finisher, eighteen year old Patrick
O’Neil (23:21) with proud
dad Steve O’Neil cheering
on his son at the finish.
Celebrating their wedding anniversary and running
like they are still on their honeymoon were Doug
and Colleen Cummings with Mr.
Cummings (24:03) finishing ahead of his wife Colleen
(24:11).
Master harrier Barbara
Bosworth (26:05) finished 3rd for the females and not
far behind Barbara was fellow master harrier Karen
Laforge (26:36) finishing 4th .
Three 58 year old racers stayed together and
finished 15th, 16th and 17th
respectfully, they were harrier Roy
Anderson, (27:42) Bob
Lussier (28:29) and harrier Peter
Stasz (29:00) knocking off more than a minute from his previous
course run. Not far behind and handing over his finishing stick promptly
was first veteran finisher SMAC’s Don
Grant (29:28).
After the race everyone gathered to talk about
the upcoming Rhody 5K while snacking on the official snack of the 2006
summer sizzlers, Twizzlers.
A special thank you to the volunteers of the
week; Brian Goddu, Bruce Kurtz, Joe Fois and
Meghan Lynch.
