It was a muggy morning on Summer Sizzler race
day. So of course the snack of choice would be watermelon and plenty
of water to refresh and hydrate the runners as they finished the
mostly sunny 8K course.
But as the race time drew near the heavy air
lifted and a pleasant, breezy New England evening kicked in. With
temperatures in the high 70’s it would still be a bit warm for the
runners, especially on the course where shade was lacking and
sometimes fighting a head wind would
slow down the pace a bit.
Thirty-one race participants gathered at the
starting line at 6:35 p.m. to see who would be this weeks number one
finisher.
It was a great night for the harriers as they
took the first seven positions in the overall results. It was Joe Hegarty (27:26), Steve
Lombardo (29:43), first master Elvin
Torres (30:34), and with her sixth win of the summer season and
twenty-seventh overall summer sizzler win, first female Mary
Ferraro (32:01), Meg
Mathews (32:34), Kelly
Joyce (32:50) and first veteran Art
Roberts (33:42).
First master female was harrier Colleen Cummings (35:18) and first senior male was Vincente
Rojas (35:28).
This week there were two predicted time winners
and only off by one second was Mary
Ferraro and Brian Goddu (35:36).
Post race conversation for the evening was the
buzz about the upcoming Fast Feet twenty-ninth
annual July 4 race in Springfield and the new race course/new
location with a 9 a.m. start.
A special thank you to the volunteers of the
week; Ed Carroll, Bruce Kurtz, Pete Stasz
and Meghan Lynch.
