Spencer Beaver & Rogina Modestow Barney Day Champs
April 19th is Patriots Day in Massachusetts, and while
most of the running world celebrated at the Boston Marathon, Western
Mass runners have their own Patriots Day tradition….the Everett
Barney Day Race. The Greater Springfield Harriers honor the founder
of Forest Park with the first race of our Summer Sizzler series of
races, appropriately held in Forest Park and alternating between an
8K road race and a 5K cross country race.
Our 31st Summer Sizzler season opened on the
cross country course this year, and the few runners who weren’t in
Boston found the Forest Park trails in the best shape they’ve been
in years. Harrier Steve O’Neil, who has been instrumental in the
effort to improve the park trails, and the Springfield Parks and
Recreation Department deserve our sincere thanks for their
efforts.
EORCer Spencer Beaver successfully defended his
Barney Day title with a 23:00 even effort over the 5K course,
holding off a game Dan McNair (23:11) of GSH. And just one second
later Harrier Rogina Modestow (23:12) crossed the line to capture
the Barney Day women’s crown, coupled with the women’s masters
title.
The home team swept the remainder of the age
divisions, as Doug Cummings captured the masters men crown in 24:01,
Doug Bielefeld took senior (over 50 per USATF) honors in 25:32
while 10 year old Chris Lemay, resplendent in his father’s original
Harrier uniform, was the first junior in 31:29, just edging Dad Mike
(31:30).
The second race of the season will be held in two
days, as the series returns to the normal Wednesday date on the 8K
road course.
