Nine Year Old Bill Carroll Wins With Age Record
You read that right.
Harrier Bill Carroll not only set an age record for nine year old
boys on the Harrier 8K Summer Sizzler course, he won the race
outright, becoming the youngest winner in Summer Sizzler history….
by far. On a cool, overcast evening the speedy youngster was
leading before the one kilometer mark, with only fellow GSHers Dan
McNair and Rogina Modestow, and 11 year old sister Julie able to
keep pace. By mid race history was in the making as Bill pulled
away from all challengers, and cruised to a 33:53 win, looking just
as fast in the last kilometer as the first. He thus joins the
Summer Sizzler Hall of Fame (a list of all previous winners ranked
by number of wins) by erasing a nearly thirty year record, the under
10 record of 34:51 set by Aaron Murphy (also age 9 at the time) on
May 19, 1981. For those counting, that’s twenty years before Bill
was born.
Rogina won the women’s race and masters title for the second race
in a row, finishing second overall in 34:41. Dan held on to 3rd
in 35:10 with Julie 4th overall in 36:28. Doug
Bielefeld was again the first senior in 37:28 while Art Roberts made
it a Harrier division sweep by winning the veterans division (over
60 per USATF) in 38:27.
The
series returns to the 5K cross country course next Wednesday as the
31st Summer Sizzler season is now in full swing.
