Matthew Helm Sizzles in 25:39
His credentials were on display in
the Summer Sizzler 8K finale last year when he ran 26:59, the
fastest time of 2009. Today Hoosier Harrier Matthew Helm clocked
the fastest time on the 8K road course this decade with a sizzling
25:39 effort. Phil Gingras, who finished 2nd in a fast
26:45, was the only runner to keep him in sight as the two sprinted
into an early lead at the sound of the starting bell before Matt
pulled away for good by the one kilometer mark. Zach Santamaria was
the next closest runner with a 3rd place 31:11. Matt is
a Bay Path College grad student by way of Anderson University in
Indiana where he was a stand out track and cross country athlete.
He is a welcome addition to the Harrier men’s team.
Cara Reilly paced her
father Art in 33:51 to capture the women’s title and add her name to
the Summer Sizzler Hall of Fame. Julie Lemanski was 2nd
in 37:40 while long time Harrier Carol L’Esperance scared an age
record with a 3rd place 40:58, earning a hat trick by
winning the masters, seniors and veterans categories. Among the
men, Harrier Brian McCarthy was the first master in 33:08 while Don
Miller won both the senior and veterans titles with a 39:11 effort
over the Forest Park course. |
