Phil Gingras Prevails for 2nd Win, Kelly Joyce Adds
#14
Carol L’Esperance Lowers Age Record Again
The fast guys showed
up for this week’s Summer Sizzler to take advantage of an overcast,
cool and breezy summer evening. Westfield State grads Phil Gingras
and Dave Estabrook along with current student Pat Regan toed the
line with Connecticut speedster Brian Nelson for an old fashioned
foot race over the Forest Park 8k road course. After the four
separated themselves from the rest of the field, Mr. Nelson and Mr.
Gingras quickly established themselves as the ones to beat and the
race was on. Along the pastoral roads bordering the Park, through
Springfield and Longmeadow, the two matched strides until reentering
the Park, where Mr. Gingras gained the upper hand and cruised to a
26:49 win, his second this season. Mr. Nelson stayed within
striking distance to finish a close 26:55, while Mr. Regan crossed
in 3rd in 29:46 outlasting Mr. Estabrook, 4th
in 30:45. Rick Lunsford took home the masters (over 40) and senior
(over 50) titles with a 32:23 effort.
Carol L’Esperance beat
all the veterans (over 60) in 38:54 to again lower the age record
for women, slicing 27 seconds from her time of two weeks ago.
Harrier teammate Kelly Joyce was the first women in a quick 33:26,
gaining masters honors as well. Her first win this season is
her 14th
lifetime Summer Sizzler victory, ranking her 12th in the
Hall of Fame. Rogina Modestow was 2nd in both division
with Carol 3rd for a GSH sweep. Eleven year old Hailey
Moseman was the first junior girl in an impressive 41:17.
This race marks the
halfway point of the 2010 season, ten races complete, ten more to go
as the series returns to the 5K cross country course next Wednesday,
June 23rd. |
