Carlos Rivera at 58 Wins, Kelly Joyce Earns #15
Carol L’Esperance Breaks Age Record Once Again
Harriers Carlos Rivera and Kelly Joyce
both won their second Summer Sizzler of the season on a pleasant
summer evening. A sunny sky with breezy 74 degree temperatures
brought out the year’s largest turnout for a tour over the 8
kilometer road course.
Carlos let teammate Luis Rivera and
EORC’s Spencer Beaver lead the parade through the first couple of
kilometers. Then he got serious and forged into a commanding lead
to earn his second victory this season in 29:17. That is a Hall of
Fame leading 58th lifetime win. After a fast closing
charge in the final straightaway, Luis outleaned Spencer at the
finish line for runner-up position, both clocking 31:01. Fifteen
year old Scott Besser took junior (under 20) honors with a 4th
place overall 32:07. Harrier Seth Roberts garnered the senior (over
50) title in 33:43 while unrelated Harrier Art Roberts won the
veterans (over 60) division in 35:46. Bill Carroll set a new age
record for 10 year old boys with a steady 34:49 effort. Earlier
this season on April 21st he set the 9 year old record of
33:53 when he became the youngest Summer Sizzler winner ever.
GSH women were out
in force. Kelly raced into the lead at the sound of the starting
bell, zipping around the Forest Park course in a quick 32:18 to earn
her second win of the season and 15th lifetime crown.
She is ranked 12th in the Summer Sizzler Hall of Fame.
After a moderate start, GSH teammate Kathy Lynch picked up the pace
considerably to finish in 2nd in 33:19, just missing an
age record. Fellow GSHer Janet Aronson was 3rd in
36:20. Kelly, Kathy and Janet were also the first three master
runners while 12 year old Julie Carroll was the first junior in
36:57.
Carol L’Esperance
again won both the senior and veteran titles. Her 37:59 effort
lowered the age record for 60 year women on the 8K course for the
third time this season, eclipsing her time of two weeks ago by
nearly a minute. She completed a perfect June, setting age records
on either the 5K cross country or 8K road course in each of the five
races held in June.
Local celebrity Gary
Rome made a guest appearance, but without his auto dealer mascot
Jack, and ran a respectable 41:14 for 24th spot.
