Brendan Kane and Kelly Joyce Beat the Heat
Nine Year Old Jason Beaver Sets Sizzling Age Record
The 2010 Summer Sizzlers are living up to their moniker as another
steamy summer evening greeted the Harriers and friends.
Susquehanna University sophomore Brendan Kane easily earned his
second lifetime Sizzler victory with a 29:09 clocking over the eight
kilometers in and around Forest Park. The former East Longmeadow
Spartan is a mainstay on both the Crusader cross country and track
and field teams coached by none other than Marty Owens, former
Westfield High coach and Harrier. Another East Longmeadow resident,
Harrier Larry Litscher weathered the heat and humidity for 2nd
overall to win both the master (over 40) and senior (over 50) crowns
with a solid 32:47. Jason Beaver of the Empire One Running Club
was next in 33:52 as the speedy nine year old clipped one second off
the age record set by Harrier Bill Carroll earlier this year. GSHer
Steve O’Neil was a close 4th in 34:01 despite spotting
Jason half a century.
Harrier Kelly Joyce
soon followed in 34:14 for 5th overall and first woman,
her third win this season. The win is her 16th lifetime
Summer Sizzler victory and moves her into a tie with Nicole McGilpin
for 11th in the Summer Sizzler Hall of Fame. Kelly also
won the women’s masters division. The club swept the women’s
divisions as Rogina Modestow took 2nd in both open and
masters in 37:26 while Carol L’Esperance was 3rd overall
in 40:29 to win the blue ribbon in both the senior and veterans
divisions.
Of interest, with Stan
Kolpa 6th in 34:54 and Rich Clark 7th in
36:40, four of the first seven finishers, all club members, were age
56 or older.
