Brendan Kane Cruises to Third Win
Maura Ferrarini Joins Hall of Fame
Mary Ryczek Lowers Age Record
With school just
around the corner, two college students prepped for their upcoming
cross country seasons with Summer Sizzler victories.
Susquehanna University
sophomore Brendan Kane breezed to his second win this season, and
third lifetime, with a leisurely 30:21 clocking over the 8K road
course. After a brief early challenge from Rafael Rogue, the East
Longmeadow resident methodically increased his lead while circling
Forest Park. Rafael finished 2nd in 33:13 just
outlasting a pair of Harriers, 1st master Brian McCarthy
in 33:19 and 1st senior Seth Roberts in 33:29.
Maura Ferrarini had
to fend off previous winners Kate Woytowitz and Colleen Cummings to
earn her first Summer Sizzler crown and thus join the Hall of Fame.
The Stonehill College Skyhawk flew over the eight thousand meters in
35:01 in preparation for her junior season on the cross country
team. The talented Springfield native and Cathedral grad is also a
standout miler and high jumper for the Stonehill track team. Kate
took 2nd in 36:09 while Colleen earned a masters win for
the Harriers with a 3rd place 36:49.
Longmeadow’s Mary
Ryczek snipped two seconds off the record for 64 year old women,
which she set just a month ago, with a 46:01 effort. Harrier Kathy
McCarthy repeated as the senior champ in 38:59 while teammate Carol
L’Esperance made it thirteen veteran wins in a row with a 39:27
clocking. Thirteen year old Paulina Modestow earned junior honors
as the young Harrier ran 42:32.
Despite the printed season schedule, there are actually three more
Summer Sizzlers left in the 2010 season. Next week the series
returns to the famous Harrier 5K cross country course, then on
August 25th the 8K road course, followed by the season
finale on the cross country course on September 1st (the
last Wednesday before Labor Day). |
