Cameron Cook and Colleen Cummings Win Sizzler Finale
Appropriately, the 2010 Summer Sizzlers ended on another
hot and humid evening, with day time temperatures in the mid 90’s.
That’s why we call them the Summer Sizzlers.
Cameron Cook
duplicated his win of two weeks ago. He bolted from the starting
line at the sound of the bell, quickly opened up a commanding lead
and was never seriously challenged. The fifteen year old
Renaissance School sophomore, the youngest entrant in the race,
zipped over the challenging 5 kilometer cross country course in an
even 20:00, slightly off his 19:40 clocking on August 18th,
but more impressive due to the weather conditions. Cameron’s
steady improvement this summer bodes well for his high school cross
country season.
EORC’s Spencer Beaver
(21:05) outran Harrier Steve O’Neil (22:20) for the silver medal
while Steve’s bronze medal effort not only earned him both master
(over 40) and senior (over 50) honors but a solid Pete’s Speed
Rating of 85. The Harriers again swept the older age divisions as
Brian Goddu took time off from his race official duties to win the
veteran (over 60) crown in 25:49 while the peripatetic Charlie Towse
was the first grand veteran (over 70) in 27:13.
Among the women,
Colleen Cummings won her first Sizzler of the year in 24:10 with an
impressive Pete’s Speed Rating of 96, scaring the age record for 44
year old women held by Harrier teammate Rogina Modestow. Colleen
also won the masters title while earning her tenth lifetime Summer
Sizzler victory. Meredith Marciano was 2nd and took
senior honors in 27:10 while Amy Donle took the bronze in 31:06.
Harrier Elaine Dill was the first veteran in 31:23.
Race director David
Wright took a well deserved rest from some of his duties (both he
and Brian Goddu still marked the course prior to the race, brought
the food, and submitted the results) to run his first Summer Sizzler
of the year in 23:38 earning fifth place overall as well as third
master and senior. Both Dave and Brian were the driving force
behind the series this year. Everyone on the club and all those who
ran the 2010 Summer Sizzlers appreciate the effort they made each
and every week this summer. Also a tip of the hat to the inimitable
Bruce Kurtz who once again saw to it those less fleet of foot safely
negotiated the two courses.
The 2010 season
concluded with the traditional Pizza Party at the Red Rose, with the
Greater Springfield Harriers providing the pizza in appreciation to
all those who ran or volunteered during the season. A good time
was had by all. |
