8k Road Race or Cross Country Race

Tonight the Summer Sizzler series continued with the 5th race on the schedule, the 8,000 meter road race. Rains from earlier in the afternoon stopped in plenty of time for the field to go out under cloudy skies and cool temperatures. Twenty eight runners lined up for the start of the race.

As the opening bell sounded it would be GSH’s Bill Carroll leading the field down Main Greeting Road towards the rose garden. Once Bill established the lead he would not relinquish it. Bill went on to win the race with a time of 31:45, not only earning him a victory but also establishing a new record for age 13 in the process. Bill’s winning time shaved 57 seconds off the record previously held by Asif Abdul-Wadud. The win was Bill’s first of the season and second of his young career. Coming in second place overall would be GSH’s Steve O’Neil in 33:46 while Mark Barile took the final podium spot in 34:44. Age group winners for the men were Bill in the Youth (0-19) division, Mark was the Open (20-39) division winner, Lenny Kraus was first Master (40-49) in 39:08, GSH’s Doug Bielefeld’s 37:22 was good for top Senior (50-59), Steve O’Neil was top Veteran (60-69) and GSH’s Dan Lynes was first 70+ with a time of 48:32.

In the women’s race, GSH’s Janet Aronson edged out a victory over Sizzler regular Julie Carroll. Janet would cross the finish line in 34:56, 4th place overall, earning her first career Sizzler victory and a place in the Hall of Fame. Julie, also running under the GSH banner, would place second female in 36:04 while GSH’s Kathy McCarthy took third female in 38:38. Female age group winners were Julie Carroll in the Youth division, Maura Feeney was first Open female in 42:59, Janet was to Master and Kathy was first Senior.

Volunteers for the evening were Ed Carroll, Brian McCarthy and Bruce Kurtz. Noticeably absent was Brian Goddu, breaking a volunteer streak that stretched over numerous race directors, equaled only in stature by Cal Ripken himself. “Ironman” will begin a new streak at next week’s 5K cross country race.

Thanks to all the runners, volunteers and spectators.

Mike Lescarbeau, Race Director
