Kenyans Glarius Rop and Jeptui Cherutich Join Hall of Fame
Carol L’Esperance Breaks Age Record for Fifth Time
Since the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City,
Kenyans distance runners have been known around the world. At
today’s Summer Sizzler, Glarius Rop, Jeptui Cherutich and Daniel
Kiprono demonstrated why. The friendly trio, by way of American
International College, took to the Harrier 5K cross country course
like ducks to water. In fact, due to a few afternoon rain showers,
the bubbling brook along the first kilometer of the course had extra
water. No problem for our visitors.
A smooth striding Glarius opened a
sizeable lead by the middle of the race, and negotiated the twists
and turns of the Forest Park course with ease. After zipping up the
final hill, he crossed the finish line in 17:53, the fastest time
since….well, since the last time a Kenyan ran the course, Victor
Kemboi (17:46) last year. Daniel was 2nd in 19:18 while
15 year old Cameron Cook impressed the crowd with a 3rd
place 20:09, winning the junior title over a talented group of
similarly aged runners. Harrier Brian McCarthy took home the master
(over 40) trophy in 22:10.
Jeptui quietly
duplicated her compatriots winning efforts with a 23:32 clocking,
thus adding her name to the Summer Sizzler Hall of Fame (list of all
previous winners) along with Mr. Rop. A pair of Harriers stayed
reasonably close as Colleen Cummings took 2nd in 24:08,
winning the masters crown and narrowly missing an age record while
12 year old Julie Carroll took 3rd in 24:43 as 1st
junior girl. Meanwhile GSH teammate Carol L’Esperance, while
winning both the senior (over 50) and veterans (over 60) titles,
lowered the age record for 60 year old women for the fifth time this
season, clocking 25:58 in this chapter of her running book. She’ll
have two more chances to continue her steady improvement as the 2010
Summer Sizzler season winds down with only five more races, three on
the 8K road course and two on the 5K cross country course. Yes,
August is upon us. |
