19th Season Begins
with Ideal Weather
A near perfect day greeted runners who gathered at the Forest Park Skate House for the
start of the 19th season of Snowstorm Classic road races. Snow and cold
were distant memories on December 5th as Harrier Carlos Rivera dueled with
master runner Steve O’Neil for the opening victory. Youth prevailed this day as
Rivera outran O’Neil by nearly a minute, clocking 34:50 over the 10K course. The
elder Central Mass Strider was hardly disappointed however as his 35:46 effort established
a new record for 47 year old men, erasing the 36:00 mark held jointly by Bob Willis and
Roland Cormier, a rare lost record for Mr. Cormier. Within less then five minutes
Harrier Doug Blanchard both lost and won a record. First the BAA’s Jim O’Toole
cruised a 42:56 and erased Doug’s 43:47 which he ran ten years ago as a 63 year old ,
but the still speedy 73 year old zipped a 47:28 for a new mark. A trio of Harriers
contested the women’s blue ribbon with Dawn Roberts’ steady 42:51 besting Kathy
Colwell (43:48) and youngster Katie Knowles who impressed with a debut 10K in 44:00.
