Winter Finally Arrives
After a
Thursday snowstorm, bone chilling temperatures descended upon Forest Park for this
week’s 5K race, bringing to an end both the unseasonably mild weather and the string
of new age records.
The
younger runners seemed to enjoy the wintry weather more then their seniors. Teenagers John
Tyson and Tom Bousquet scampered around the tree just past the mile mark in the lead, with
only ace master Bob Willis able to keep pace. The rest of the runners were strung out
around the windswept baseball and soccer fields, braving the single digit temperature,
sub-zero wind chill, and snow covered roads. Thoughts of pr’s and age records gave
way to thoughts of simply finishing, and the warmth of the Skate House and hot chocolate.
John
Tyson (18:06) made his Snowstorm Classic debut a successful one as the seventeen year old
Amherst High schooler held off Harrier Bob Willis (18:10) by four seconds, with GSH
teammate Tom Bousquet (18:11) a tick of the clock behind, all excellent times under the
conditions.
Harrier
Dawn Roberts (23:36) chalked up another Snowstorm Classic win in the women’s
division, followed by Deb Bercovici (24:32) and GSHer Mary Misiaszek (24:55).
