O’Neil Finally, Roberts
Again
After finishing second three times and fourth three more times, the tenth Snowstorm
Classic was the charm for Steve O’Neil. The Central Mass Strider ran away with the
race from the start, steadily increasing his lead throughout the ten thousand meters of
snow covered roads encircling Forest Park. At the finish line his margin of victory was a
convincing three minutes and twenty-four seconds with the official clock stopped at a
respectable 38:30. Harrier Tom Regnier (41:54) edged SMACer Richard Clark (42:06) for
runner-up honors.
Dawn
Roberts (47:50) notched her fourth win for the second consecutive season with an equally
convincing victory in the women’s division. Betty Quinn gave chase in 49:54, narrowly
missing an age record in the process despite the road conditions, while Sharon Mikaelian
took third in 50:25.
A
sizeable contingent of students from Smith College took advantage of the sunny skies and
warmer temperatures to tour the longer Snowstorm Classic course. Although one group of
poetry students toured a bit too long, taking the road less traveled, which resulted in
the required DQs, all were rewarded with the usual Harrier hospitality, including valuable
cultural prizes and gourmet refreshments.
