O’Neil Takes Two,
Roberts Five
Clear roads and sunny skies belied the cold temperatures as the 20th Snowstorm
Classic season marches to its conclusion. Only one race now remains on each of the two
Classic courses.
Steve
O’Neil picked on the little kids to win his second consecutive Snowstorm
Classic, this time on the 5K course. The veteran Central Mass Strider clocked a
respectable 17:56 to outdistance Mike Gauvin (2nd in 18:08) and Erich Fiedler
(3rd in 18:43), two Harriers whose combined ages fall well short of Mr.
O’Neil’s total birthdays.
Dawn
Roberts sped to her third consecutive women’s title, and fifth this season, in a
quick 21:09. Betty Quinn took second in 23:05 while Deb Bercovici held third in 23:41.
Art
Roberts (19:49) and Jim Halton (20:20) took one-two in the senior division then accepted
their awards for completing all the USATF-New England championship road races last year,
attractive New Balance jackets with the logos of each of the seven races imprinted on the
back. Art and Jim were mainstays of the Harrier senior men’s team in 1999, which
placed third in the 1999 New England Grand Prix and third at the USATF National 10K Cross
Country Championships in Long Beach, California on December 5th. The senior
team looks to have another banner year in 2000.
