Records Fall Instead Of Snow
Runners took advantage of mild temperatures and
clear roads to establish five new age records at the first Snowstorm Classic road race of
the season. Burt Prokop led the parade with a solid 16:44 clocking over the 5K Forest Park
course, establishing a new record for 39 year old men in the process, taking down Celio
Hernandez’s mark of 16:47 set in 1993. Harrier teammate Bob Willis garnered 2nd
in 17:07 and erased the 17:11 standard for 49 year old men set by Roland Cormier in 1990,
a rare eclipsing of a Roland record. Jeff Totten placed 3rd in 17:16 in his
inaugural Snowstorm Classic. Frank Rucki brought the record for 50 year old men
under the eighteen minute barrier with a 17:56 effort, eliminating the 18:14 standard set
by John Hale in 1992. And 12 year old Jesse Regnier of Fast Feet Track Club fame
broke one of the oldest records on the board, the 20:07 mark set by Robert Sanderson in
1981. Jesse apparently wasn’t intimidated by a record set eight years before he was
born as he knocked nearly a full minute off with a impressive19:10 clocking. Among the
women, Sandy Welner notched a Snowstorm Classic win in 21:59, edging Betty Quinn who ran
22:04. However Betty captured her first Snowstorm Classic record, lowering the 22:21
record for 49 year old women set by Mary Ryczek in 1996. Maureen Ashe took 3rd
in 23:23.
