Willis, Wenninger Weather Wind
Harriers Bob Willis and Heather Wenninger overcame
both the wind and the cold to post new age records at the season’s first Snowstorm
Classic over the 10K course. As he did the previous week at 5K, Bob toppled a Roland
Cormier record, always a tough assignment. This time the target was 35:30, the record for
49 year olds which has stood for a full decade. Bob not only shaved five seconds off one
of the best records on the books, but he gave the younger runners a distance running
lesson with a 35:25 Snowstorm Classic win. It appears Bob is rounding into top form for
his entry into the senior division next year and will add to an already strong Harrier
team which just finished third at the national 10K cross country championships in Long
Beach, California. New member Jeff Totten gave chase around the roads of Forest Park
and just missed with a second place finish in 35:49, while Carlos Rivera, in his first
race since his efforts for the open men’s team in Long Beach, took third in
36:11. Among the women, 16 year old Heather Wenninger continued her winning ways
with a 40:58 clocking, chopping nearly two and a half minutes off the 43:22 record set by
Maureen Moriarty fifteen years ago. Heather was also just back from California where she
led the Harrier women’s team to a 12th place finish in the 6K USATF cross
country championship. Michelle Sosnowski returned to the running scene with a second
place 43:14, while Deb Bercovici took 3rd in 47:14 in her first Snowstorm
Classic race.
