Fastest Over 10K Classic Course
It was not a morning (cold temperatures and a slippery stretch on Washington Boulevard)
when records were expected to fall but one did. Back from a trip to Ireland where he
ran Ras na hEireann, could it be that Sandu found that magic Irish racing elixir, iron,
while there? Only three others have covered this course in a faster time, Gary
Giffen, Steve Snover and Dave Hanechak. Sandu's 32:57 thus moves him into fourth
spot on the all time runner list, and in addition is the seventh fastest time ever run on
the 10K course (Steve Snover having four faster times). The record for 31 year old
men also fell, ie. Gary Crowley's 33:44 which he ran eight years ago.
The rest of the field was led by
last week's winner George Barker who ran a respectable 38:11, followed by master winner
David Wright in 39:17. Harrier Art Roberts (41:33) edged SMACer Peter Gargarin
(41:51) amongst the seniors as Harrier masters runners took five of the top ten
spots. Fourteen year old David Raucci of the Troy Trailblazers (New York) won the
junior division in a quick 39:38. David qualified for and competed in the USATF
National Junior Olympics Cross Country Championships in Reno, Nevada this past December.
GSH's Dana Hachigian won the
women's race in 43:48 capturing masters honors in the process. Carolyn Webber
(44:57) was 2nd and second master, while Deb Bercovici took third in 45:10. Carol
L'Esperance was first senior in 45:21
