Carlos Rivera
Again, Heather Gardiner Returns
Carlos Rivera raced to his fourth
win of the season while Heather Gardiner, who shares the all time
course record of 17:36 with Sue Haryasz and Carol O’Connor, returned
for the first time this year for an encore performance. Both victors
ran impressive times considering the wintry conditions – cold and
breezy with lots of rutted, icy stretches.
Carlos crossed
the line comfortably in front in 18:06, but was pressed throughout the
five kilometer course by 17 year old high schooler and fellow Harrier
Alan Bohdiewicz, who repeatedly surged back into contention whenever
Carlos opened up a lead.. Eventually Carlos pulled away from the
youngster, who finished in 18:47. Come back kid Peter Fratini toured
the Forest Park course in 19:12 to capture 3rd, just ahead
of master winner Bill Rowe (19:21). Steve O’Neil made it a clean
sweep for the home team by winning senior honors in 20:00 flat.
East Hartford’s Heather Gardiner
demonstrated why she was named Connecticut’s runner of the year
(female open division) by New England Runner magazine. The unassuming
IT specialist for Pratt and Whitney sped to a 19:56 clocking despite
the weather and the difficult traction. A game Mary Misiaszek took
second for the 5th time this season with a solid 22:10
effort while GSH teammate Heather Wenninger took 3rd in
23:05. Kim Freedman was the first master in 25:43, outsprinting Joan
Monroe of the Hartford Track Club.
