How Cold Was It? Rich Clark Won!
Rich Clark
claims he saw penguins waddling across Porter Lake during the race,
and no one is going to refute him as the long
time Sugarloaf Mountain Running Club member captured his
first ever Snowstorm Classic victory in a frozen-in-time 41:27. Bone
chilling single digit temperatures caused beards and mustaches to
become icicle laden, while the slippery road conditions caused
several strained muscles and DNF’s.
But
at the finish line, without apology or excuse, it was "Polar
Bear" Clark with a commanding lead. Harrier John Bigos coldly
claimed second in 43:01 while Chris Conz took third in a frigid
43:49.
Among
the women, master Harrier Cheryl Place earned her second win of the
season with an ice solid 45:23 clocking, good for eighth place
overall, followed by Colleen Cummings in a
shivering 48:45 and Kim Freedman in frosty 51:35.
A
pair of fifteen year olds led the juniors: Jesse Regnier of Fast
Feet Track Club fame in a chilly 46:18, and Mary Wilson, who
ice-skated her way over the ten thousand meters in 54:03.
Was
generational toughness on display? Of the 56 official starters, only
two were between the ages of 19 and 34. It was veteran runners in
their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s, joined by a handful of brave, young
high school students, who challenged the Arctic conditions at Forest
Park today and inscribed their names in the Harrier record books on
what was a memorial Snowstorm Classic race.
