Ben Hildebrand Scorches
at
Steve Snover Memorial
Carolyn Webber Doubles Her Career Titles
Ben Hildebrand was the
only warm thing in sight as the 22 year Kingswood-Oxford physics
teacher from West Hartford, Connecticut, simply scorched the 10K
Snowstorm Classic course in 34:32. Although the time was well off the
recent Kenyon College (Gambier, Ohio) grad’s PR of 32:10, the
temperature wasn’t in single digits back then nor was the track
partially covered with ice and snow. It was the fastest time this
season and with the win Ben joins the Snowstorm Classic Hall of
Fame.
Only
two other runners were able to crack the forty minute barrier in the
North Pole like conditions which enveloped Forest Park. Peter Fratini
chased the leader for 37 minutes and 45 seconds to capture second
while John Kelley took third and the master’s title in a respectable
38:41 expedition. Frank Rucki (40:46) edged Steve O’Neil (41:05)
among the seniors with Bruce Rockwell (49:38) the first
veteran.
The
women’s race was close throughout between previous winners Carolyn
Webber and Kelly Heroux. Carolyn maintained her early lead over a
persistent Kelly as the two Harriers finished in 43:38 and 44:09
respectively. With her 5th win of the season Carolyn
doubles her career total and vaults towards the upper echelon of the
Hall of Fame leaders. Kelly Anne McKeown ran 45:55 for third while
Betty Toms Matthews took senior honors in 50:35.
The
race honored Steve Snover, a former GSHer who recently succumbed to
cancer. Steve still holds six Snowstorm Classic age records, including
four on today’s 10K course, one of which is the age 22 record of
32:42. Thus it was only fitting a 22 year old of Ben’s caliber
should win the race. All entry fees are being donated to the Ian
Snover (Steve’s son) scholarship fund.
