Dawn Roberts Reaches Top
While Tom Bousquet Joins Hall of Fame
Warmer temperatures
turned the frozen tundra of Forest Park into a slippery mix of
slush, melting ice and snow, with a couple of water jumps thrown in
for good measure. Despite the resultant slow times the race was no
less competitive. Harriers Paul Fratini, Carlos Rivera and Tom
Bousquet staged a classic 10K duel, taking turns slipsliding into
the lead before Tom, a special ed teacher in Chicopee, splashed into
the lead for good. The young upstart slid across the finish line in
37:15 to notch his first ever Snowstorm Classic title, becoming the
fifth runner this season to join the growing list of Hall of Famers.
Carlos regained form just in time to slip past Paul at the finish,
37:45 to 37:50.
John
Kelley repeated as 1st master with a credible 39:54
performance, one tick of the clock ahead of senior winner Steve O’Neil.
Steve, who has a knack of racing well on ice and snow, turned the
tables on senior nemesis Frank Rucki who ran 41:28. Tom Conlin
(53:23) claimed veteran honors over a cautious Charlie Towse (54:28)
and Don Grant (55:36).
It’s been over a
year since Dawn Roberts has won a Snowstorm Classic, but it only
took her one try to rectify that situation. Art and Joan’s speedy
daughter romped through the puddles and ice skated across the finish
line in 45:34 to claim her 30th career Snowstorm Classic
title, thus tying Mary Ryczek for the #1 position in the Hall of
Fame. GSH teammate Mary Misiaszek took another silver medal with a
49:19 effort while Betty Toms Matthews won both master and senior
titles with a 3rd place 51:34 performance.
The race was held in
memory of Doug Blanchard, a long time member of the Greater
Springfield Harriers, who died this past year. Doug continues
to hold 23 Snowstorm Classic age records including 11 on the 10K
course.
