Kent Lemme Blazes Finale
Carolyn Webber Wins Seventh
Kent
Lemme ran the fastest 5K Snowstorm Classic in almost a decade as the
Williamstown resident burst from the pack at the bell and flew
around Forest Park in a solo 15:57 effort. Witnesses at one point
testified that he literally hurdled a frozen snowbank on route to
the fastest time since Sandu Rebenciuc ran 15:38 in 1995. In gaining
his second win this season the gazelle like Harrier narrowly missed
by 5 seconds the age record for 37 year old men.
A
stable of young thoroughbreds showed up for the season finale to
take advantage of the clearing roads and moderating temperatures.
Tom Michaud and Joe Czupryna were the best of the colts as they both
clocked 17:19, Tom rewarding his backers with winning place tickets
and Joe’s fans cashing for show. Sixteen year old Jason Ayr
followed in 17:33.
Dave
Reinhart lowered his own course record for 51 year old men, running
17:40 to slice five more seconds off the standard he set two months
ago. The Harrier senior leader also won both the master and senior
titles, topping John Kelley (17:56) and John Bigos (18:46)
respectively. Newly minted Harrier James Morton was 3rd
in 19:03. Erv Landry was the fastest veteran in 25:27.
With
a total of eight wins between them this season, the bookmakers were
predicting a close race between Harriers Carolyn Webber and Kelly
Heroux. Right on the money, both ran their
fastest times of the season with Carolyn (19:52) pulling away from
Kelly (20:08) for her seventh win this season, and 12th
career victory, thus moving her into a tie for 8th place
in the Hall of Fame. Not far behind was Sarah Thiede (21:17) whose 3rd
place finish led a large contingent of soccer players from Trinity
College (Hartford, Connecticut).
Mary Ryczek returned for her second age record in as
many weeks, as the 57 year old CMS mainstay ran 23:05 to erase
another Doris Aronson record, the 23:51 the Harrier set 14 years
ago. Mary now owns a total of 25 individual Snowstorm Classic age
records, the most of any woman.
The 24th annual Snowstorm Classic season
ended with three runners completing all thirteen races.
Senior standout Steve O’Neil added 13 more races to his career
totals and has completed more Snowstorm Classics then any other
runner. Punch his name in the searchable database for the impressive
list. Not far behind, Brian Goddu who chalked up another 13 races,
assisted at the registration table and was the Harrier media liason.
And of course, that venerable SMACer Bruce Kurtz who also added 13
and has now finished 91 consecutive Snowstorm Classics over the past
eight years.
