That’s Why They’re Called Snowstorm Classics
It was only appropriate that the 24th
Snowstorm Classic season should begin with an old fashioned New
England snowstorm but that didn’t deter 60 hardy runners from
toeing the starting line for a 5K romp through picturesque Forest
Park. The slippery conditions not only preventing any age records
from being threatened, but also insured a close finish.
Carlos Rivera sledded
in first in 19:23, closely followed by Harrier teammate Brian Walsh
(19:28) who slid past Andrew Lutz (19:34). Doug Guertin was next
with an impressive 19:57 to capture master honors while CMSer Frank
Rucki skidded across the finish line in 20:33 to take the senior
title. Carlos’ victory moves him past Celio Hernandez for sole
possession of third spot in the Hall of Fame with 23 lifetime
Snowstorm Classic victories.
Carolyn Webber
outskated the women with a graceful 21:55 performance, earning solid
tens from all the judges, while Kelly Heroux (22:46) and Mary
Misiaszek (23:35) glided across the finish line with the silver and
bronze medals respectively. Carolyn was also the first master, while
Ellen Bellicchi took the senior crown in 30:28.
Harriers David
Estabrook (21:37) and Meghan Lynch (24:32) enjoyed the snow while
sliding to junior honors.
