James McGowan and Carol L’Esperance Win 10K
Charlie Towse Notches Age Record
James McGowan won his first
Snowstorm Classic, Carol L’Esperance her 14th, and
Charlie Towse claimed another age record to highlight the first 10K
race of the season. Cold and blustery conditions greeted the
runners for their tour around Forest Park but yet another impending
snowstorm held off long enough for the road racers to clock relatively
fast times.
Mr. McGowan convincing outran the field (as well as the finish line
crew) in his initial visit to the race series. With a solid 35:20
effort the Springfield College affiliated runner became the 80th
member of the Snowstorm Classic Hall of Fame. Sixteen year old Ludlow
ace Jesse Regnier gave valiant chase in 36:38 to capture 2nd
as well as junior honors, while Tom Michaud (37:30) outsprinted Andrew
Lutz (37:31) and Tom Walsh (37:36) to earn the bronze
medal.
Charlie
Towse claimed the first age record of the 24th season as
the peripatetic Harrier traveled the ten thousand meters in 45:32 to
snip two seconds off the record for 66 year old men set by Doug
Blanchard twelve years ago. That’s the fourth Snowstorm Classic age
record for Charlie, two on each course.
Less then a
week after earning the USATF cross country title for senior women in
Greensboro, North Carolina, Carol L’Esperance returned to the
winners circle with a 43:35 clocking, her 14th career
Snowstorm Classic crown. Teammates Mary Misiaszek (45:09) and master
runner Kathy Lynch (47:12) followed for a Harrier women’s sweep,
while daughter Meghan Lynch (48:59) was again first
junior.
