Carol L'Esperance Sets Another Record
Apparently age has additional
advantages besides the senior discount. Forty nine year old Harrier
Mike Montemagni won his first ever Snowstorm Classic in 38:31 while
leading a contingent of masters and seniors across the finish line.
Master Doug Guertin was 2nd in 39:32 while rebounding
senior Steve O’Neil claimed 3rd in 39:44, edging women’s
winner Kristina Depeau who debuted with an impressive 39:45. The next
three runners to finish were 49 year old Rich Clark in 40:02, 50 year
old John Bigos in 40:16, and 59 year old Art Roberts in 41:23. In the
largest field so far this season, there were three times as many
runners over 40 as under 40, and twice as many runners over 60 as
under 30. The youngest male to brave the longer Snowstorm Classic
course was 24 year old Jay Kolodzinski who finished 21st in
44:38.
Not so the
women. Trinity College student Kristina Depeau finished 4th
overall while becoming the 75th woman to join the Snowstorm
Classic Hall of Fame. Nineteen year old Christina Langevin won the
junior title in 43:38 over seventeen year old Meghan Lynch’s
48:16. Rebecca Bassett was 3rd women in
43:11.
The women
also had their senior star. USATF national cross country
champion Carol L’Esperance toured the 10K course in 42:43, 2nd
woman, to earn her second age record of the season. The 54 year
old speedster erased the 43:01 standard set by Hartford Track
Club’s Zophia Turosz way back in 1993.
And as 2003
draws to a close, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that 67 year
old Bruce Kurtz not only continued his volunteer efforts on behalf of
the Snowstorm Classics, but the venerable SMACer also recorded his 82nd
consecutive Snowstorm Classic finish, a remarkable athletic
achievement encompassing eight winters. Even Lewis and Clark
would have been impressed.
